AI Novel Outline Generator: Chapters, Sections & Characters

AuthorFlows' AI novel outline generator turns one story idea into a working project: chapters, the sections inside them, and a cast of characters, all as normal project data you can edit. In our test, a two-sentence romance premise produced 10 chapters, 20 sections and 5 characters, and the whole result opened as a project rather than a document to copy somewhere else.

It is a starting point, not a finished plan, and this page is specific about both halves: what it builds, and what it leaves for you.

What you give it

Click Create New Story and switch on Generate outline with AI. The dialog asks for four things, and only the first is required.

• Story idea (required): a sentence or a paragraph. Genre, characters, setting, whatever you have.
• Genre (optional).
• Target length: short (3 to 5 chapters), medium (5 to 12) or long (12 to 15).
• Custom title (optional): leave it empty and the AI suggests one.

Generate, wait about a minute, and the new story opens. Nothing here asks you to choose a story structure yet. That comes after, and it matters (see below).

What lands in your project

We generated a romance at medium length from a two-sentence premise: a lighthouse keeper and a marine biologist clashing over the future of a Moroccan island. The story's Overview page shows the result as counts, because the output is project data.

Once the characters are in your project, our character profile template shows which fields to fill in first.

Open the Chapters planner and every chapter is there with a title, a status of Idea, and sections inside it. Chapter 1, "The Keeper's Solitude," came with two sections, Opening Scene and A New Arrival, each with a short written start already in place, so you aren't staring at an empty scene.

The characters arrive in the same character system the rest of the studio uses, so a generated character is the same kind of object as one you build by hand. Everything is editable, and nothing is locked.

What it leaves for you

This is the part most outline-generator pages skip. In the screenshot above, the Summary box on Chapter 1 is empty. The generator fills sections and plot outlines, but it does not write chapter summaries, it does not mark which characters appear in which chapter, and it does not place story-structure beats. That list isn't a failure. It's the to-do list for turning a generated outline into your outline. Each line has a Fix link to the page where you resolve it. We'd rather show you that than pretend the first draft of a plan is a finished one. Character names are worth a look too: in our test, the AI picked names that didn't all fit the setting we described, and you'll want to rename anything that rings false.

From generated outline to working plan, in four steps

1. Read the chapters and cut what isn't yours. Delete, reorder or rewrite chapters in the Chapters planner. Nothing is locked.
2. Pick a story structure on the Timeline and mark the chapter where each big moment lands. AuthorFlows supports eight, and tells you whether each moment is on track, early, late or out of order.
3. Write a one or two sentence summary for each chapter, and mark who appears in it. This is the data the Analyzer and the writing assistant read.
4. Start drafting. The AI writing assistant now has a structure, a plan and a cast to work from, which is why its suggestions fit better than they would on a blank project.

A project, not a document to import

Many AI outline tools hand you a document: a chapter list you then copy into a separate editor and rebuild by hand. AuthorFlows skips that step. The chapters, sections and characters the generator produces are the project data itself, so the same story you generated is the one you plan on the Timeline, check in the Analyzer and write in the Writer, with no export and import between them.

The manual option

None of this is mandatory. The AI switch is off by default, and with it off you create a story from a title and description and build the structure yourself, chapter by chapter, character by character, with no AI involved at any step. Expert POV: why the outline doesn't lock anything in

Outlining splits writers into two camps for a reason. Plotters want the whole map before they start, pantsers feel boxed in by one. Most AI outline generators quietly assume you're the first kind and hand you a rigid structure to follow. We built ours to generate a full structure fast, chapters, sections, characters, and then get out of the way. Nothing locks. You can gut half the chapters, rename characters, or ignore the outline entirely once you're three chapters into a different story than the one you generated. The value isn't the structure being right the first time. It's not staring at an empty project when you start.

What does the AI outline generator actually create?

Chapters broken into sections with a short written start, plot outlines and a cast of characters. It does not write chapter summaries, mark which characters appear in which chapter, or place story-structure beats. Those are yours to add.

Is the generated outline something I can edit?

Yes. Chapters, sections and characters open as normal editable project data. Nothing is locked or read only.

How long should I make the outline?

Short is 3 to 5 chapters, medium is 5 to 12 and long is 12 to 15. Pick what you are building, then add or remove chapters in the planner. Our medium test produced 10 chapters.

Do I own what the outline generator creates?

Yes. What you generate is yours, and AuthorFlows states it never trains its AI on your manuscript or story data.

Is my story idea private when I generate an outline?

Yes. Your premise is handled like the rest of your manuscript: never used to train AI, and only sent to AuthorFlows' AI providers, which are contractually barred from training on it, when you generate.
